WHAT IS A SEED LIBRARY?
It is a collection of seeds kept for the purpose of lending them out to
the public. People sign out seeds of their choice for free with a
simple promise to plant, grow, then harvest and save from a few of
the plants that are grown. Of those seeds, they agree to return what
they borrowed and share or retain the rest of the seeds to be kept in
their family or community. The secondary purpose eventually
becomes to grow and build on the number of seeds in the collection
so that the community will benefit by having access to more varieties
of seeds.
SO, HOW DOES IT WORK?
HOW TO BORROW:
1. Interested folks must attend one of the orientation sessions
offered by the library team. Choose as many as 5 packets of
seeds to grow in your garden.
2. Fill out a registration form to become a seed-saver and list the
seeds you are going to grow and return.
3. See a short instructional program on how to save seeds. Then,
Get Growing! You are a seed-saver!
HOW TO RETURN SEEDS:
1. Once you have collected and dried the seeds you have harvested, set aside seeds for yourself, then fill out the seed envelopes at the Museum or the ones you were given at any of the meetings, with the information you have about each variety and place your seeds in the envelopes.
2. Return your seeds to the Museum designated drop-off spot. The library team will make sure that they will be matched up with your original sheet where you listed the varieties that you checked out!
3. You have completed your mission! Now you qualify for the next level. Biennials, Pumpkins, Squashes and Corns! Yeah! Just ask about how to get those seeds.
